odd problem on 99 A4
Hey, new to the forum. Almost all my work has been in the Subaru world new to this whole Audi thing.
Have a 1999Audi A4 2.8L V6, got the car a few years back and has run great for me. About a year ago let my father drive the car for awhile(mistake!). And he ran the battery dead, and then left the key in the ignition when jump starting the car completely destroying the MAF I believe...Got all that replaced and a new battery at the dealership for about $1,200 and then he returned the car to me(added some nice dents here and there too [:@]). I drove it trouble free for about 3 months.
Left the car with my mother while she was having work done on her car, shedrove it for a few weeks and then the battery died and wouldn't start. So, when I got free time from work came and looked at it, jumped it and drove it around the neighborhood a few times and everything seemed ok. But, checking with the voltmeter, it lost voltage fast. Shut it off- read about 11.9, twenty mins later-read 8.7-and then twenty more mins-read about 6. Didn't have the time and my mother's house is located where there is a ton of snowfall, left it until today.
Plan was to jump it, drive it somewhere to get the battery and alternator checked and go from there. But, when jumping it, a puff of smoke came up right near the front of the car just off the driver's side of the engine. The car would not start, the engine turned over but would die immediately. Removed the cover and all that and took out the screws to the coolant tank, but couldn't see anything wrong down there... Also, out the tail pipe was a whole lot of smoke that I can't really place my finger on what the smell was, it was oil mixed with something, but it really wasn't sweet smelling like coolant.
Any help/advice/ideas very welcome...and sorry for such a loooong post!
