Default Oil Change Opinions

Hey everyone, just got me a 2004 A4 1.8T this last weekend, good times! I've been doing a decent amount of DD, but 2 main things still confuse me. Seems like on forums and peoples opinoin, the oil change is every 5k and the timing belt is between 60-75k. Audi maintenance says oil every 10k and timing belt at 100k. Dealer says oil at 5k and timing at 100k, so it seems like everyone hasa different opinion.

Obviously changing at 5k couldn't hurt, and I want to optimize the maintenance to avoid and costly repairs that would come about by not taking the proper measures. Overall consensus I get is if you change it every 5k and the timing belt early, plus checkpoint stuff, in theory 200k+ should be a breeze.

Anybody have thoughts on this? TIA.

I'm doing oil every 5k, and plan on doing the TB at 75k.

we dont do it becasue he we like to werk on our cars, 1.8t are victims to sludging and if they timing belt goes your head goes to hell, preventitive maintenace yes but we are making sure we dont have crazy expenses when we reach higher mileage, basically the more you do to keep car new and running the better is it.

1.8t are victims to sludging
Make sure you use full syn oil, (mobil 0w40 here) and the LARGE A4/Passat filter. It was the lack of oil that caused the sludge and also people using non syn oil.

oil sludge is a common problem on 1.8T's so you want to change it every 5k. also you want to only put synthetic on turbocharged cars. i suggest Amsoil 10w40. the timing belt shouldn't go before 80k but some people do it at 60-70k just in case. some people have never changed there's and are at over 100k. you can never tell when the timing belt will go and its really expensive if it does. i suggest 70k.

Audi updated their recommendations for oil changes to 5K miles a few years ago in a letter to Audi owners due to sludging problems. Use synthetic oil only. they also updated the filter recommendation to big-sucker Mann or Bosch filters which add approx 0.5 Qt to the overall oil in the car.

Audi still recommends 10K mi. oil changes in the 1.8t.
Use synthetic oil and the large oil filter.

You have the updated tensioner, so do the timing
belt around 90K mi.
