i picked up a mann filter W719/30 today from my local parts store. can anyone confirm if this is the correct oversized oil filter to use for my 2000 1.8t?

The Mann Oil filter you want is a W940/25. This is the same filter as is used in the VW diesel engines. Just tell the parts people you want an oil filter for a VW diesel rabbit (1979-1984...all of them were 1.6 liter engines). I think the VW number is 068115561. These filters are big...like you'd find on my dad's 1968 Plymouth. They hold about twice the amount of oil as the originally specified filter. You can do a web search for "Mann W940/25" or "Mann 068115561".
