2. Drain oil through the drain plug on the oil pan ( but make sure its the oil pan youre draining, ive seen some people on here start draining their transmission.)
3. Use a filter wrench to unscrew the oil filter which will be visible if you look up towards your throttle body right behind the subframe. Be careful you dont spill hot oil all over your face though.
4. Replace filter with new one making sure to lubricate the top of it with some of the old oil. hand tighten it in until it starts to have some resistance then turn it about 3/4 of a turn more... DONOT OVER TIGHTEN OR USE TOOLS TO TIGHTEN
5. Replace drain plug and use a new crunch ring "washer".
6. Fill the car with the new oil to a little over 4 quarts, start the car for like 10 seconds and turn off, check oil level, and fill appropriatly.
if you unscrew the coolant reservoir, if gives you alot more room. its only 3 screws and a clip at the bottom

I just did the brothers passat 1.8t and the dealer install some bolts (with metal clips for them to screw into) that dont come out and i couldnt get the skid plate completely off. Why they did this i dont know. I had to sawzall one of the bolts off and i couldnt cut the other. But basically i was able to drain the oil with one bolt still in place, but i had to remove the filter from the top. I ended up having to work the massive filter under the tb hose and out by the radiator. It was a little to much work.
although im a b6er, i get a mobil 1 oil filter from autozone for $9.99 and its the same capacity as the large OEM filter...
they also have a fram race filter that is the large capacity as well for $12.99
the larger filter is part of audi's bulletin to helps prevent/slow sludge, im not sure if it keeps it cooler or just allows for more capacity
