Yes, we've had this problem too - repeatedly - have an 1998 A4 Quattro wagon - the valve cover gaskets were replaced under warranty at 31,800, again at 60,000 and now leaking again at 80,000. Also have continuing problems with control arms. Audi has been the most repaired car we've ever had - for the price you pay and the reputation Audi wants to have as an upscale luxury car, I think they could do much better to keep their customers coming back. I like this car, and usually hang on to cars a long time, but will problem never buy another one because of reliability! When you pay this much for a car, it should be much more dependable and when there is a known problem that so many Audi owners are experiencing, Audi should get with it and make the customers happy.

Well the valve cover gasket is very easy to fix yourself if that's what you want to do.

Hi I'm back again with the valve cover gaskets leaking again!!!!! In September we had the following done: "Replaced cam tensioner seal per previous diagnosis, remove and replace valve cover gaskets, cam seals and plugs and tensioner gasket." About a month after this was done, that old smell of burning oil was back and sure enough, it is leaking again!!! This will be the fourth time these have been replaced. Any suggestions before we call for service??? This is a 1998 A4 Quattro wagon. I love how this car drives, but it is breaking the bank! I hate to even look at all the money we have put into this car.

Audi's are pretty much a labor of love man. I swear to god ive replaced every part on mine cause the original has broken or just is worn out to hell. Just last month i replaced my control arms and put on all around new bilstein touring cup shocks. And one of my motors on my rear windows burned out. Pain in the *** but a labor of love. I do agree for the name audi is putting out there there not doing a very good job but im speaking from an older 97 a4 maybe the new ones have better quality and engineering. But from what ive heard maybe not.

If this is the 4th time the valve cover gaskets are being replaced for leaking oil then one of the following is the problem.

The person replacing the gaskets is not doing it properly,

The valve cover and mating surfaces are not straight, or clean

The oil leak is not coming from the valve cover gaskets.
