Default Oil pressure....

How can i tell if my engine is holding oil pressure?

There doesn't appear to be an oil pressure light on the dash, it has the computer but i'm guessing that just checks for oil level??

It's a '96 1.8t btw

cheers

Oil pressure gauge. You can pick one up for about 50 bucks give or take. Not sure how the install works on these though.

Ah just read the manual, which maybe i should have done first. That says the oil pressure light is in the computer, the oil can symbol.

Reason i ask is that i have a real bad tapping no, sounds like its 1-3 tappets, though oil pressure might be low but does look like it.

Engine flush? try and clean them out?

do a search on Lifters

low oil could cause the lifters to be noisy, or they could be sludged up, in which case a can of Jusitic Bros oil additive will help (it helped my lifter noise).

It wouldn't hurt to check your oil pressure at idle, using an oil pressure test gauge. In fact, it wouldn't hurt to install a real oil pressure gauge on the dash. The 1.8T engine is infamous for sludging up, and tappet noise is often an early symptom. Alot of folks recommend Auto-RX or LubeControl instead of some of the harsh, kerosene-based engine flushes.

As for hooking up an oil pressure gauge, find a tap on the motor where the oil pressur is routed, prefferaly towards the end, but you can T tap the oil pressure sending unit the car already has. Mount your gauge and your ready to go, And just a word of wisdom. spend a little more and get the electric on. Don't want hot oil in the car!!
