I think what I said is the oil light type of a thing. But that goes off every 10,000 or something.

one of my friends manages an audi dealership/garage outside of Frankfurt and I asked him about oil changes and inspection cycles he said over here (Germany), it's all incorporated into one inspection/servicing that is audi recommended at every 30,000 km. (approx 18,000 mi.)

There is a service light that comes on. Depending on the year/ I believe it comes on every 5K miles. It is triggered by mileage since the system was last re-set.

On the 2001, there is a "service" display that comes on around every 8,000 mi. The interval depends on how you drive. They do not assume you are using synthetic engine oil. With oils that meet ACEA A3 or A5 you should be able to go 10,000 mi. between changes.

Not worth the risk of going 10K miles with the known sludging issues in the 1.8T's... if you're used to changing it every 3K miles, then keep it up! I (as well as many others here) use full synthetic, and change it religiously every 3000 - 3500 miles.
