My '03 1.8twas sputtering and stalling and it turns out 3 of the 4 coils are cooked. Is this normal for three ofthem to fail at 80,000 kms? This car seems to a non-stop attention *****, really starting to regret getting rid of my BMW.

 

I think it's far more likely that you have a bad ICM than all the coils going bad at once. have you pulled the codes yet?

 

There is no ICM on a 2003. It would be unusual for all 3 to fail at once. Have the codes pulled and post them here.

 

or buy three, start by pulling one of the 3, see if that fixes it, if not start replacing the others not all at the same time, might just be one and it is making the others throw codes that happened to me with cyl 4, gave me 2 bad coils and random multiple misfire code........ switched some around and tracked it to 4 then replaced #4 and was all good

 

or put in four hitachi E coils from ecs for $120 i think and not worry about them going out again!

 

dealership ones cost 36 a piece, so right about same price after tax and shipping
