Default Only goes into gear while off?!?

Hi, New to the forums i'm trying to troubleshoot a problem with my brothers car. 5spd 1.8t, pretty sure its a 99.5. Recently out of no where (according to him) the car will not go into gear. We had the car towed home. When I looked at it, I noticed i was able to push in the clutch and goes thru the gears with the car off. I could even start it in gear and move it, but once taken out of gear while running it will NOT go into any gear. Does this make any sense? Please responsd or message me if you can help thank you -Tim

sounds like a toast clutch man or it could be the slave cylinder

Thanks for your response. I thought i could rule out the bad clutch because of the circumstances. The clutch did grab to move the car. This seems like a total seperate issue. Anyone else?

One way to test it is to get the car on level ground and clear to the front (so if it moves, it doesn't hit anything). Then, with the engine off, in 1st gear, clutch fully depressed, crank/start the engine. If the car moves forward, the clutch isn't disengaging fully, which is usually the master or slave cylinder.
