I have a 98.5 a4. Will I have to do some fender shaving to get these to fit, or will they fit right in. ECS didn't mention any triming on the description of the product, but in searching these forums it seems like some have had too, and others have not.

 

You have to shave the fender if your car came with two piece headlights and you try to install one piece headlights. Your car has two piece headlights since it is a 98.5, and the ecodes should be one piece headlights, so you will have to trim the fender.

Now I haven't done it, but looking at the DIY, it didn't look too bad if you just take your time and have a dremel.

the only warning they give in frnder triming is here. ECS should be more clear

You are correct. I didn't look to hard at the halogen ones though since they are on back order and I wanted HID's. Those instructions are not XENON ready description. Thanks though.
