Theres only one design flaw with the aluminum oil pan. You can hit stuff with it. Sounds more like a driver problem.
resulting in a cracked oil pan again
The hardest part about changing the oil pan is supporting the engine while the front portion of the subframe is lowered. Also dont forget about the two bolts inside the bellhousing.

Assuming you have a 1.8. Support the engine either from above or below. Easiest way is to use a jack so you can move the engine up and donw. It makes things easier to take off. Make sure if you chose below the support wont interfere with pan removal. Remove nuts holding on lower part of both engine mounts. Remove front snub mount if necessary. Its usually in the way. REmove 6 bolts that hold front portion of subframe on(the part with the motor and sway bar mounts. Wedge a 2x4 or other sutable material to hold the subframe down. You will need a rather large pry bar to hold the front portion down. Remove the 4 belhousing bolts that also go thru the pan. The one on the passenger side is a pain because it is a nut and bolt configuration. Remove the 2 big bolts going upwards thru the rear portion of the pan. REmove all smaller pan bolts. Dont forget the ones in the bellhousing. That should get the oil pan off. You may have to pry on it a little as it may be stuck to the bottom of the engine block. Be carefull not to crack the plastic windage tray during pan removal. Its a tight squeeze. Now would also be a good time to clean out your oil pump pickup. Its only 2 bolts. Just make sure you replace the o ring. Clean all sealing surfaces with a razor blade. Use the audi oil pan silicone to seal up the bottom of the pan. Make sure to go around both sides of all bolt holes. Also dont use to much. You only need a small bead. Install is reverse of assemably.

Just as a fyi the 2.8 30v A6 oil pan is very easy to change. Ask me how I know.
The part was $65 used and it took between 20 and 30 minutes with air tools. Take off the sub frame sway bar mounts (4 bolts) and then take off the 19 10mm bolts. I used grey permatex to seal it up.

I wish I could make $700 in 30 minutes!
