Default Out Of Control Car!

I can't figure out whats wrong with the my 99.5 audi a4 1.8T Quattro Tip....

Early yesterday mourningaround 6am in southern california, I started my car and the rpms just shot up to 4k rpm for no apparent reason and stayed there for about 1 min before slowly droping to 1k rpm. Thought that was kinda weird, but didn't think anything of it because i had to get to work. So, after a long day of work I was headed home driving on the 22 freeway for about 20 mins and took the 7th street exit. I was coming to a stop light and i notice while i was at thestop that my car suddenly started reving up by it self. It was scary especially when there is pedistrian walking on front of the car, its like my car is trying to kill these innocent people and im pushing on my break for my life.

What can be the cause of this? Any suggestions or advices?

Thats pretty strange. I would check the throttle body to see if something is causing it to open by itself.

I would be looking for a vacuum leak or the IAC has a problem

Tb or or what avant80 said are the likly culprits, get under there and look and see what you can find, do a TB reset and if that doesnt work scan for codes.

IAC is the throttle vavle. There are always problems with the throttle valves and that sounds like something that it would do.

If that is the problem...what are the signs of a bad IAC?
