Default over inflated tires

This may be a stupid question, but I will admit I am not the greatest car guy in the world....I just checked my tire pressure on some pirelli all season tires..225/45/17 V-rated..they list 40 PSI as the max, and the dealership I bought the car from had the tires over inflated by 10 pounds...at 50 PSI...is this normal? I know there are some things to do to a car in the winter to prepare it for the slippery weather, is this one way of keeping more of the tire off the road for the winter so that there is less slippage? or did the dealer screw up?

30 psi max unloaded all round, 40 is too high and 50 is deadly

too much psi will cause the tire to wear down in the middle. if you didnt drive too long on them like that then you should be ok, just check the tires for uneven wear. or just take them to a lesschwab and tell them whats going on, thell help you.

They come aired up that high fromthe factory to prevent flat spots. The dealer most likly just never lowered the pressure before the car got in your hands. 50 is on the high side but isnt really dangerously high. Just lower then to the pressue on the vehicle. It should be around35psi.

i rented a monte carlo before i bought the a4, and the right front tire was reading 93 on the guage.. i figured it was a faulty gauge.. no.. it was at 93. i kept letting the air out expecting my arm to blow off.
