Whenever my dad drives my car, he still fumbles with the starting process, and goes at it a couple times without putting the clutch in until he remembers. Anyway...
I always put mine in gear too even if I'm not on the slightest incline, good habit. My friend left his wife's Jetta in neutral and had the E-brake fail. Needless to say, he got a call while he was working that his car pwned someone elses car. I usually put it in first irregardless of which way I am likely to roll though, I figured the engine's compression would hold it from moving forwards (or backwards).

i don't have to depress the clutch to start my car regardless of whether or not it's in gear...i wish i did have to though
