Default Performance opinions for '98 2.8 Quattro

Hey everyone. First off I'd like to say that this is an AWESOME SITE! I've been browsing around here for a couple days and decided to join. I just picked up a '98 2.8 quattro about 3 weeks ago and love the car, can't beat it with a 10 foot stick. Pearl white in color, auto tranny (5 speeds are impossible to find out here!), all options except heated seats and the 6 CD changer, but the sound system was upgraded to all Infinity, sounds good. Anyway, I'm looking for opinions on some performance options. I've been looking for just a muffler, absolutely can't afford a full exhaust or cat-back at the moment, I'm starting college next week and just buying the car was a stretch for funds. Everyone tells me to get a cheap muffler and upgrade later, I think that's a waste of time and money. Looking at Borla because I've got a friend that has one on his VW GTI and it sounds awesome. Was quoted $300 for just the muffler at a performance shop locally, not really sure what the price range is on these things, haven't really priced them out. I do know I can get one on Ebay for about $100, so $300 sounds really wack. The muffler is probably in a one month time frame of getting done, just want some good sound flowing out the back and will upgrade to full exhaust/headers later on down the road.

I've also been pondering about a long term upgrade to the GIAC chip. I was reading about it on ndimports.com and wasn't sure if you have to send in your stock ECU to get reprogrammed or is it a piggyback unit? I know the cost is about $500, and I'm not really sure what kind of performance to expect with the 2.8, I know it livens up the 1.8T quite a bit, but I don't know about the 2.8.

If I had my way I'd put a bunch of money into the car, but like I said college is breathing down my neck and this car is a daily driver, so rims/suspension is kind of far off at this point. The roads out here are really rough and with a lowered car I'd be really worried about beating the crap out of the underside. Eventually in a couple years I'd like to turn this thing completely upside down and go for K04 turbos out of a 2.7T and an RS4 intake boot (plastic bad, metal good). Add on a water injection system, boost controller, turbo timer, etc. and all the exterior goodies. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks for the help!

this isnt practical and its not worth it

i like to say welcome to the world of german luxary cars where everything is expensive
u dont kno wut kind of muffler u can get for 100 but good luck on that
if u want a nice sounding muffler i say go wit REMUS

and i say dont get a chip for the 2.8 u only get like 5HP gain so its not really worth it
the 2.8 doesnt have that much performace parts and potential like the 1.8T

Where can I get a Remus muffler? Can't seem to find anywhere to get one, maybe I'm looking in the wrong places. Any decent websites out there that sell them? I was afraid of the fact that the GIAC doesn't liven up the 2.8, I'll have to find some other options. Thanks.

i never really look for a good shop that carries remus becasue
i knew this place carried it
http://www.jngautosports.com/
they are a walkin distance from me
they told me two mufflers for 500 not a bad deal

here are some remus sound clips
but rememeber remus only promotes sound not power gains but i dont think you should expect much from just a muffler
for gains u need a full cat back ssytem

Sweet, thanks for the links. Right now I'm just going for sound, can't afford a cat-back yet, maybe in a few more months. That's why I want to buy a muffler now that is worth keeping on the car when I get a cat-back later on down the road. Thanks again.
