Hello Fieldy.

Very nice set up. I'm working on something that's almost exactly the same, so I was hoping you could share some of your experience. I have an Audi A4 1.9TDI 2000 model Avant, and I'm switching from the Syphony head unit to the Pioneer AVIC-X1R DVD navigation unit.

1. Where did you get the modification plate to switch the dash in to 1 din size? Did you make it yourself, or was it custom made by someone else? How much did it cost, and are there any chance one more could be made?

2. Do you have a picture of the wiring to the headunit? I have everything up and running now, except the rear door speakers. These rear speakers are powered by a seperate amp somewhere, but I don't know where it is.

I would really appreciate it if you or someone else would give me a hint.

Thanks

1. custom face plate made by my audio shop. any respectable one should be able to make it. i got my whole system done there, so it was only an extra $50. takes a couple of hours to fashoin out of wood, then vinyl it.

2. unfortunately i dont have pics of wiring, it was all professionally installed. worth it in my opinion.

Thanks Fieldy for your reply.

I would have done the same as you and got it proffesionally installed if I would have found someone that was both good/professional and reasonable when it comes to price. Unfortunately I live in Norway, and there are not a lot of car stereo installers that satisfy these criterias.

My system is now installed, and I have sound from both my front, rear and subwoofer. Unfortunately there are still som small issues.

1. Since this is a Pioneer AVIC-X1R DVD system with navigation, there are some special connections that needs to be done. One is to connect a wire to the speed pulse. I'm still searching for this the speed pulse wire in my car....

2. My radio reception really sucks. I have read somewhere that this Audi has an active antenna with a antenna signal amplifier somewhere. I guess the Audi Symphony unit provided this antenna amplifier with power. I'm still trying to figure out how and where I can power up this signal amplifier.

3. And of course the custom face plate. I'm going to try to get some help from a friend who might be able to make something decent at his place of work. If this doesn't work out, I might have to make something myself with a MDF board and some leather/vinal material. I guess it would look something like what you have gotten installed. I have actually tried the Metra turbokit 99-9101, but it only fits th Audi A6 Symphony unit even though Metra says it fits A4 on their website. The kit is a little to short in width and a little to high in my car.

I have attached one picture that shows what my car stereo looks like now - AWFUL!!!! It looks a little better when the screen is up, but it's still totally unacceptable. This is hopefully just temporary for a couple of weeks, but it bothers me everyday i step into my car.

I would really be thankful if any of you would have any tips on my problems.

Thanks...

A little late in the thread, but here goes:

Pioneer makes the dash adapter you need.

Pioneer part number Fits car
10P568 AUDI TT, A 2, A 3/A 4 02.99 - 10.00
10P570 AUDI A 3 since 11.00 - 06.03
10P537 AUDI A 4 until 01.99
10P593 AUDI A 4 since 11.00
10P538 AUDI A 6 since 05.97, A 6 Avant since 02.98, A 8

The antenna adapter shouldn't be more than 10-20$. Google for "audi antenna adapter" to find shops. A brand called METRA makes one, but i haven't found them online.

If you cant fint a local supplier for anntenna adapter you can try the strip antenna from Pioneer - ANTMC1

Unfortunately neither of your suggestions helps me out. The Pioneer dash adapter that you suggested, is the same adapters as Audi sell. These adapters are ment for changing an Audi original 1 din unit into a regular aftermarket unit. They just solve the problem on the sides. I have a 2 din Audi symphony, and I need to fill out a much bigger hole.

Pioneer adapter plates :

Audi Symphony stereo :

I think you understand what I mean.

Unfortunately your antenna tips doesn't help much either. I already have the adapter you mentioned, so the antenna is hooked up to my stereo. The problem is that somewhere in the car there is a antenna amplifier, and this amplifier needs to be powered. After trying google and eBay, it looks like all of the adapters that show up are the same as the one I have. There is another adapter that has a built in antenna amplifier, but this is not what I'm looking for. I want to power up the existing amplifier in my car.

Audi antenna adapter (almost the same as the one I have) :

Amplified antenna adapter :

I'm really thankfgul for your suggestions, and I'm very sorry if I have misunderstood you. Please post links and/or images if there are something I have misunderstood.

On the other hand.....

I have started my own dash modification, and so far I'm very pleased. I bought a 9 mm thick plywood (I think that's the English name for it. Kryssfiner is the Norwegian word) board, and cut out a shape drawn from using the original Symphony stereo. I cut it with an electric saw with a very fine blade, and the result was amazing. It fitted in great, and the thickness was almost perfect. I have now installed it, and I will paint it black later today. I have ordered som carbon fiber imitation vinyl on eBay, and I will probably try to put this on the new wood stereo surround plate, and also on the buttons right above and the air conditioner underneath. I think that might "hide" the home made feel of my modification.

Here's a couple of images before it's painted. I'll try to post some new ones as soon as the paint job is finished :

And a close up....

I still need suggestions on the antenna amplifer issue, and a tip on how I can find the speed pulse. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all.... :-)
