Please Help! Door lock problem, 98 A4 2.8Q
Hi,
I am new to this forum, but have searched for an answer to my problem for a few hours now and I could not come up with anything.
I can unlock all doors with the key (in the drivers door). But, I cannot lock all of the doors (or arm the alarm) with the key in the drivers door. The passenger door works well- locks and unlocks. The inside switches also lock and unlock as they are supposed to.
I took the door panel off and I didnt notice anything that looked strange, but I am not very familar with this setup.
This is very frustrating If anyone has any information relating to this, I would appreciate it!
Thanks in advance,
Matt

Funny you should ask...
I just picked this car up and I did not get a remote when I bought it. So, I bought the switchblade key for it and had it cut for this car. Well, I do not think I can program it because the drivers side door will not lock with the key. It will not take the programming. Does that make sense?
Someone else mentioned maybe the three button switchblade will not work with an early 98 A4. I have heard conflicting statements about this. I know the 3 button will not work for the 96, but I thought it would for 97 and newer.
Thanks in advance, this is very frustrating.

geez, sorry im stumped. Sounds like one of those situations when you just may have to suck it up and take it to the dealer. I really hate saying that.... Sorry. I hope someone else here can help you out though.

Thanks.
I called the dealer, talked to a mechanic and he was very helpful. It sounds like the drivers door lock assembly is bad. This sends the signal to the pump to lock all doors and arm the alarm. The only problem, the part is $140 and you need to remove the window regulator to fix it.
I am going to try cleaning it first. I wonder if the passenger's door lock assembly is an interchangeable part? I would rather try it with that one (and maybe permanently use the passengers side assembly) than paying $140 for a chance for it to work.
Thanks again for the input.
