The cupholder at the very front is usable without having to move the armrest up. The one behind it, however, well, you have to move up the armrest to use it. But it makes sense to me: when do you have two different things in two different holders? Likely when you're munching on something. If that's the case, you really don't need the armrest, or if you do, you don't have to move it up all the way.

I think Germans can't understand how Americans consume, especially in the car. Regardless, it has worked fine for me.

Haha.. I've got a tip, so can leave it down, and be all comfy in the process!! What is wrong with the cupholder in the dash? It holds drinks, and as such, it does exactly what it's meant to...

Well I was actually talking about the very early B5 cupholders, the ones next to the Ebrake. The ones in the dash are better, but about 20 people a year post how they spilled coke and now the butons on the radio don't work anymore.

ok the arm rest sucks, b/c you can only have short drinks in the drink holders when its down, then you have to lift it up to get to them, you cant shift b/c you elbow bangs into it, e-brake is blocked, and the cup holder in the dash doesnt work b/c when its hot outside the condensation from the drink drops down and hits everything, and come on i live in texas its always freaking hot *** outside.

I love the dash cupholder in my '01 B5, it works quite well for me. My center armrest has a phone jack in it, and a huge hole (was ment to be there, for the optional phone i suppose), its a PITA!!! So **** is always falling out of my armrest! [sm=dontgetit.gif]

When the A/C is on the vent blows right onto any cup in the dash cupholder...my coffee gets cold in record time...have to always remember to close that vent.....and when you hit a bump, you get spillage all over the radio....the dash cup holder should be lowere and closer to the driver. The arm rest cup holders are useless as texasaudi stated. really poor ergonomics...pretzel logic.

Dont have an armrest, and those things Audi calls cup holders are nothing more than cell phone holders. They suck big time everyone knows that...

I'm a delivery driver and I double up fountain drinks all the time in the cupholder under the armrest (though sometimes it's a bit tight). I've also learned how to get them out w/o raising the armrest. My biggest complaint with it is that when it's in the upright position whatever is in it tends to fall out all over the back seat and the floor so my dog can have his way with it later.
