Default power loss when fuel low...?

2001 A4 1.8TQ 89k

When my fuel tank gets low, there is a loss of accelerating power that takes place. I'll have the gas pedal all the way down (not clicked though), and the car will slowly come up to speed, not reving even close to as high as it normally would. This happens when I'm at about a quarter tank and lower.

Any ideas? I've searched the archived posts and can't find much info on it. Is this just a fuel-saving mechanism that Audi's have?

Thanks in advance.

Have you scanned for codes?

Maybe the pickup screen in the tank is clogged, so that the fuel flow drops when the tank is getting low. Or your fuel pump is weak. When was your fuel filter last changed?

Haven't smoked crack since last week...might still have been tweaking when I wrote the post...haha...

I have scanned for codes, and nothing relevant has come up. My fuel guage does change a lot though, depending on altitude (I live in the rocky mountains) and whatnot. My mileage-to-empty readings will definitely vary a lot.

I haven't changed the fuel filter in my car, I bought it about 6 mos. ago and put about 8k on it since (now at 89k). Is a fuel filter easy to change? I might just try that. Thanks...

live in the hills ( altitude ) and 1/4 of a tank? sounds to me its a combination of all or you were going up a steep hill and all the fuel went to the rear of the tank for a while so the system would detect a lose of fuel pressure ( or the lack of it ) so no codes = no problems just dont let it run that low on fuel

could be a faulty fuel sender unit but best way is dont let it drop that low on fuel ( the problem is known ) it happened to me, I was parked on a slight incline and came out to start it up and zip so I rolled it to a flat spot and it started so I guess it was fuel level and it too was on a 1/4 tank

any idea how much it will cost to repair...and is it a difficult thing to replace (the fuel sender)? Thanks...

the fuel sender unit is part of the fuel pump so wont be cheap ( a breakers yard perhaps ) the fuel pump and sender is in the top of the fuel tank
