Power steering pump
Need your expertise. Bought my 16 year old daughter a 1996 Audi A4 2.8 FWD with 98,000 miles for Christmas in 2006. We love the car and everything has been fine until now. She was getting ready to leave for school the other day when the car started making a terrible moaning and groaning noise. Extremely loud when turning the steering wheel. The fluid level is fine but does have air bubbles, almost foaming. I have not detected any leaks yet, but will investigate futher when snow melts. Is the problem the pump, the rack, or both. The car has not been driven since, and she says this was the first time of any noise. Is pump replacement easy enough for DIY. Also, my apologies if there are previous posts on this problem. I looked, but could not find any. Thanks, in advance.
Yep most likely a bad/leaking pump, but check everything for leaks. Since its right on top off the engine it shouldn't be too difficult to repair. Sorry I can't find any DIY articles.
I just got a 96 a4 2.8 and i had the same problem. All i did was flush the system with a couple quarts of power steering fluid from the and then filled it with hydrolic fluid and drove about 10 miles and it was gone. To flush the system you need to access the hose from under the front driver side wheel so you should take that off and find the hose. If this doesnt work then change the pump.
