preventing a nasy piston to valve encounter

preventing a nasy piston to valve encounter
got a 5spd b5, and the stick seems really really loose and well.. wiggley (for lack of a better word). i checked all the mounting hardware, but it's definatly not as solid as my friends 91 rx7 or my other friends s13...
its making me mad because i cannot be as persice as i would like to in my shifts, i just sort of guess where the next gear is and hope its not a mis-shift...
which, in time could cause me huge amounts of trouble due to the very, very nasty encounter my piston's might have with one of my valves...
will a short shifter help this?
or is it the springs in the gearbox that need to be strenthened?
HELP!

Man I know what you mean, I hate the feeling of that loose shifter.
I have an S13 im selling and I have the B&M one that replaces
the whole assembly that bolts onto the tranny and that is the
tightest shifter on any car period. It is very notchy and extremely short.
I feel like I am driving a video game car or somthing. I wish they made
the exact thing with the Audi but I am certain they don't.
