I have an Audi A4 2.0 FSI SE 4dr Multitronic Saloon 2004 with 44,000 miles. PRNDS lights started flashing the other day and its shifting between D and S, but I didn't loose any power. Diagnostics says:

18201- transmission speed sensor 2 (G196) No Signal P1793
17090 - transmission range sensor (F125) Implausible Signal P0706 Intermittent.

i am bit confused as to what needs to be changed? do I have to change few sensors or whether transmission ECU needs to be replaced? Are sensors located outside the gear box? What kind of cost are we looking at?

I booked an appointment with an Audi dealer but they charge like £135+vat / hour. Ouch!!!!

I found a company in uk that can rebuild ecu for like £250. But I don't know what the problem is and whether rebuilt ecu will work fine as its located, I believe, inside gearbox and its replacement is probably 4-5 hour job.

Any help will be appreciated.
