question about boost
ok, I'm a noob, and this is a noob question, but I did look through all the stickies at the top of the A4 section and couldn't find an answer to this question.
I'm looking for an A4 right now, I haven't decided which engine I want but I know I definitely want quattro, and a manual transmission. I'm leaning towards the 1.8T, simply because it seems like it's much easier to squeeze a bit more power out of it. this leads into my question; I've read a lot of stuff on this site about chips from GIAC, REVO, and APR mostly, and a lot of people claiming they're running pretty large amounts of boost, like 20+ PSI. my question is, how much boost can the otherwise stock 1.8T handle? are the stock pistons forged? I know that you need to upgrade the diverter valve and possibly change springs if you want to run super high boost, but are there other mods needed before you can use that much boost? I know that in my RX-7 turbo II, I had to upgrade my fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, and injectors, as well as my computer to run anything more than 14 PSI, is this the case in B5 A4's as well?
thanks in advance for any replies.

so there are no issues with detonation? just chip it and away you go, 25 lbs of boost?
seems like there's got to be a catch here somewhere. either the 1.8T is ridiculously overbuilt/detuned, or a lot of people are going to be blowing holes in the tops of their pistons at some point.

well with AEB engine codes there are plenty of people pushing close to 280 to 300 awhp on stock internals.
Most will say that 400chp is the Max of a stock AEB engine.

and do you happen to know if VW used forged pistons in the 1.8T?
I think form reading post after post here, with chip you can normaly expect the boost at around 17-18psi. Maybe spiking a little higher than that.
Then, those running the bigger turbo setups, 25+ psi is common.
With the AEB, we've got folks here that have been chipped for 60-80k with no issues. And we have Arif, who has a gt2871r on his car which has about 150k miles on it. He put it on maybe 15k ago?
So yeah, the stock internals on the AEB are pretty bullet proof to a point. The newer models are pretty reliable as well, although not as many of them seem to be BT, maybe cause the DBW? Most of the B6-b7 seem to be k04.
I dont know if the aeb has forged pistons. I dont believe so.

so a chipped 1.8T can even be considered to be a reasonably reliable daily driver too? I'm sold.
yes a chiped 1.8t is safe. and you can drive it for a long time. as far as boost levels...i ran 21psi on a t3t4 and made 337whp with stock internals. and in texas i was running 40psi also on stock internals. the only problem i ran into was blowing ic pipes off

40 psi on a t3/t4? on stock internals? or was this on the stock turbo? will the ko3 even push 40 psi?
