Default RE: question about boost

The rods in an aeb are cast, the prisons and crank are forged. The people running mtm chips with 1.5 bar or 24 pounds of boost are putting out the same hp #'s as people running 17 pounds, once you go above 1.2 bar the turbo becomes less efficient. If you get out of it's efficiency range gas will pre ignite due to the increased heat. With new forged rods and a front mount inter cooler the motor will handle about anything anyone wants to throw at it from what I gather.

awesome, thanks tractioncontrol. forged crank and pistons! sweeeeet. is it common to see people going the forged con rod route? at what point do the factory cast rods decide to throw in the towel?

so for the stock turbo, 17 psi is pretty well the limit of the turbo's efficiency, is that correct? do you happen to know ball park figures for the ko4 as well? I imagine it's capable of pushing a bit more pressure, but I would think that most of the power gains are through the added volume due to the bigger turbine and compressor.

I've noticed that both GIAC and REVO claim 200 bhp and approx. 240 ft/lbs with their ecu upgrades, I'm assuming those are pretty much the numbers you'll get with the said 17 lbs of boost on a stock turbo? any idea what that would go up to with the ko4 upgrade? or does that require different software...

17-18psi CHIPPED while spiking to 20-21.

depending on the year with ko4 the boost is different. for example the 2000 a4's that run the J31 are supposed to boost at 28psi i believe. but most boost at 24.

to tell you the truth revo spanks giac. i had revo and its a better sensation.

only reason im with giac is because of the ko4 upgrade later on.

when you say the revo gives a better sensation, do you mean it feels like it pulls harder? like the *** dyno I guess. I thought the giac was tuned for more bottom end, and the revo was tuned for more high-end horsepower, is this true?

also, will the stock clutch put up with chip, dv, and 17 lbs boost? I'm thinking no.

Yes it feels like it pulls harder. See the thing is that the new GIAC ("monster") file runs at 1.3 bar and i think thats what kills the performance of the car. Once i hit that it dies out.. around 4500-5000k rpm. Its prety much the limit of the turbo. while the revo would hold it past 5k

I have not had previous versions of the GIAC X file so i really cant tell you if there is a difference.

all i know is that revo was a frikin freight train past 3800RPM and it would pull HARD past 5K easy. Every stereo type is true .. Its great for the highway and rolling pulls. the GIAC accelerates really quick but i dont feel the "sensation" of the revo. i wish i could explain it better.

I will post again tomorrow when i get my boost gauge hooked up so i can check for leaks. Also i hear the dentist drill now so my turbo is on its way out. that also might have something to do with the lack of performance and the fact that i need a bigger exaust. maybe even a bad n75 i dunno .. I know exactly what you mean, my buddy has a starion, and it's a torque monster but doesn't have much top end. it pulls like a tractor from about 1800 rpm to about 3000, and after that it kind of tails off. my rx7 turbo was exactly the opposite, it didn't even build boost until around 3000 rpm, and didn't really pull hard until about 4500-5000, all the way to 7200-ish.

is it REVO that has the free trial software, the 5 hour version or something? or is that GIAC? I remember reading about it somewhere.

thanks for sharing your experience, I appreciate it. first-hand experience is so much more valuable than manufacturer's claims when trying to decide which product to use, I find.

no problemo.

The revo has the 5 hour trial but its really nothing. i had it before i got the actuall software. you feel a bit more boost but thats about it. its a whole different story when you get the actually software.

I wonder how cool it will be if a revo file is tweaked for a b5 KO4 to put out numbers like pc16/j31/Hammer.

I cant wait till i get the hammerrrrrrrrrrrrrrr its gona be great.
