question - acquiring a 98 a4 2.8 avant
It does look like the warranty would cover them. CA can be pretty expensive, dealer quoted $450 for one upper CA. There are 8 CA on the front of the car so do the math. The uppers go long before the lowers, but still. How much is the warranty? Might be worth it if you have 1 or 2 CA go out on you. They have to get bad enough to start squeeking or thumping though before the warranty covers it.
The price will always be higher at a dealer. $3k premium may be about right. But then you need to add the warranty in to so you are talking about a good chunk of money for a 10 year old car.
I guess what I was saying is that if you buy something privately you will get it for a lot less. If you are able to DIY some things (CAs and TREs aren't that hard) then not having the warranty isn't a big deal.

i bought a car from carmax in '04. i bought the 3year service plan too. I regret it because i could have payed much less at a dealer where i could talk about the price. they were also pretty shady on the service aspect. I bought at the Naperville, IL carmax if that makes any difference.
good points to be taken into consideration for sure.
tdrill - unfortunately im not a DIY type of person when it comes to cars, so im thinking the 3yr service plan (which is about 1,900) seems like a good idea for me.
01a4t - do you regret buying the car from there altogether? or just the service plan?
