Default question before i buy new turbo

hey guys, just got my car back from the mechanic to check out my boost leak. they told me that my turbo wastegate isnt working and that i need to replace the whole turbo. is this true, if my wastegate is broke i have to replace the whole thing?because if so, im going k04. please give me some suggestions and truth to this subject. thank you.

also, funny how i trust you guys more then my mechanic, and i have never even met any of you. you guys are great

your wasegate is prolly prematurely opening. Not sure if you can just replace the wastegate actuator on a K03/K04 turbo or not. Didn't think so. Go K04, you will love it. Just got to make sure you get everything else to optimize the power of the K04 (ie. programming, bigger fuel injectors)

yes you can run the ko4 on stock ko3 software. however in order to extract the true power of a ko4 you will need software and supporting mods.

so just get a ko4 and start building onto that slowly

what year is your car?

98 a4 1.8t. i understand that it wouldnt get the true power. i just dont want to buy it and then break it. will i need bigger injectors like the guy said in the prior post? ok, and what about a fpr, is that a manditory upgrade, or again like you said, thats one thing i can do slowly to upgrade? also i want to make sure that this turbo is the correct one for my 98 1.8t qu automatic(tip).

I dont believe you need anything like a fpr or injectors. only when you get actuall ko4 software.
