Raced a HEMI
The turbo will get quite hot and performance will rapidly deteriorate with added heat. However, you still shouldn't lose to a truck. You need the following in order to make your A4 legit.
Chip
Catback or turbo back exhaust
if you run in high heat all the time, you should prolly get a FMIC (front mount intercooler) to help with the high temperatures
As for the temp gauge, mine has never wavered from the middle except during winter, in which case it starts below and comes to mid after a few miles. The OIL TEMP gauge is apparently a better indication since on hot days I will see movement (but never even halfway up the gauge despite running it 7000 miles with a CEL on during the summer).

LOl, another good noob story.
Of course you'll get your assz handed to you in a stock a4, have you any common sense? I mean a 300 hp truck vs your 150hp audi, cmon!
You need a freaking chip like George Bush needs a speech writer/therapist. That extra 40 hp makes a big difference, you'd have taken him more than likely.

you guys could try wrapping them with those insulated covers it would help with the heat anyway...... i had a supra turbo and you couldn't even touch the hood after i raced and the paint would never stick on the hood where the turbo sat until i did that
I have an update on the heat problem. After class today i dogged the audi a little bit. when i got back home i popped the hood and i couldnt put my face within a foot and a half of the airbox-turbo-cat area to see if it was red hot. i think i need a TIP and possibly a hose kit bc all the ruber ones were too hot to touch. The air intake box itself is too hot to touch, i wouldnt want to leave my hand thater for more than a few seconds, and its still mourning so were talking 91* with little humidity, but the exhaust manifold, and the engine cover were not. i dont know if that means anythinng just wanted to add that. Would larger air flow plumbing help cool the engine off some?

Lets face it......our turbos glow cherry red when we get on them. Maybe the K04 handles it better...idk. My guess is if you get acold airintake and a front mounted intercooler you will at least get cooler air to your engine so performance doesnt drop off....but it will always be toasty in there. Im a noob though so ask the 5 star guys lol.
Skip the air intake. It does almost nothing unless you have a big turbo (Garrett, T16, etc.). As far as cooling, the FMIC will definately help reduce temperatures at the intake manifold. My car ran like $hit in Montana during the summer but was blazing fast in winter (-15 degrees means John is mucho happy). The silly *** stock audi SMIC sucks and gets heatsoaked in a few minutes of hard driving.
As far as the engine being so hot you can't get near it, I've never experienced this. When I run my car really hard I let it idle for five minutes after ragging on it, then turn it off. Five to ten minutes later I check the oil to make sure all is OK in that department and I've never experienced heat like you're describing (and it is regularly 85+ with no humidity in Montana). See if one of the 5 star guys has any ideas about cooling or if you don't want to wait, take it to a mechanic and ask them if your SMIC is fu##ed up.
