Default Rattling noise when in Drive

Hey everybody!
I'm experiencing a weird problem that i noticed this morning.
When I am in drive or reverse I hear a rattling or ticking (it's quite rapid). I noticed it when my brakes were applied while stopped at a stoplight. I'm not sure whether it's coming from the engine or the transmission.

Here were my observations:
The ticking was most noticeable while in drive or reverse (basically in gear) and the brakes applied
I'm positive I can hear it while moving and the brakes are not applied
The sound is not occuring when in neutral or in park (with and without the brakes applied)

I have a 2000 A4 1.8T Quattro Tiptronic

Does anybody have any ideas or has anybody experienced this issue?

Thanks

B

it could be the exhaust but that would still make noise in nuetral and park.

id say tranny or drive train/ shaft
since its only when in gear what about stopped at a light but still in gear

Sounds like exhaust or a loose honeycomb in the catalytic converter.

Can;t be fixed, however, if you are in the US, emissions equipemnt has an extended warranty. I believe it is 8 years and 80K miles,

Thanks!

Just noticed another sound in conjunction to the one i described earlier:

On the slow acceleration and deceleration I hear somewhat of a grinding and whining sound (like scraping tin). I know that I have to replace my wheel bearings (this weekend) but the sound does not seem to be the wheel.

I hear the sound when I hit the gas and when I apply the brake.

I don't think it's the belts because I had them replaced last summer (90000KM).

Has anybody been through this before?

2000 1.8T Quattro Tiptronic

Thanks so much!

Does it rattle when you're in neutral and revving??? I've gone to the Audi Stealership 6 times now to get my rattling fixed on the USP. I found out it's a metal sleeve somewhere in the exhaust that is loose on the ultra-sports. So I think they'll finally check into it more. If you hear it when revving, it could be a leak when punching the gas, and also when the car's winding down to idle (the back-pressure). Keep us updated and good luck.

The rattle is not audible when in neutral and in park. I'm hoping that it is something minor but so far I'm not lucky in that manner.

In the past 24 months I've spent $2800 CDN in various repairs (not maintenance).

Thanks for your help!
