Default rear coolant elbow

well i have a coolant leak on the 2002 a4 1.8t and it is coming from the left rear of the engine it looks like its coming from an elbow that is bolted to the engine with allen wrench screws. I am not sure what that part is or what is does i tried to check the coolant hoses back there to see if they were cracked or missing clamps but they seem to be fine. the thing that i am getting is losing coolant and have to fill the resivoir every week with half a gallon of g12 and then i am not getting heat from my heater and thenit will over heat to the 3/4 mark and come back down theprevious owner didntuse g12 and i had to drain the old stuff and put new ones in. but the thing is that i cant pin point the leakcause its so freaken cramped. if you know what that part is orif there is anything else i haven't lookedat let me know thanks. im about to go buy a manual from haynes cause its cheap for 17 dollars i know there are others that are better but i have had good luck with haynes b4 for i can work around that

Just did this fix this weekend. It's the plastic coolant flange that the hoses mount to. It fails at the back of the engine and is leaking around the o-ring seal to the head. replace engine temp. sensor as well , good insurance. Had to peel back some other stuff to get at it. Google "b6 a4 coolant flange replacement" to get step by step instructions.

wear gloves. for some reason there is a metal piece whose sole purpose seems to be to cut whoever tries to replace the coolant flange
