Default rear resonator

a while back i was wanting my exhaust to sound a lil deeper w/o puttin much money in my 2.8 A4 and the shop said they could just cut out the rear resonator, just before the cat, and put in a straight pipe...and that that should to the trick. has anyone else heard of this or know if this would decrease/increase performance?? i wouldn't think it would harm anything, but i just don't want it to sound like poo. thanks for any input!

That will def. be louder. I had that removed on my GTP but also had flowmaster put on.
