I think the rings are built into the axles which is why the parts are so expensive, but that sounds likea load of horse ****! Just get the two rear abs sensors and install them yourself and see what happens.
I think there is a single allan bolt holding in the sensors, easy repair. If that doesn't fix it then worry about the rings.

I'm having the same problem. What makes them so sure that it's the rears? Have you got any CEL's or ABS lights?

You can monitor each wheel speed sensor using the VAG or VAS 5052 while drving or raised on a rack.
If the rears start going wacko the tech is gonna assume the problem is in the rear, and to save his own *** he's gonna say its both the sensors and the rings. Reality of the flat rate world they aren't trying to screw you in general they are just trying to get paid and get the next car in thier bay.

Well that is a pretty awesome thing to know. I suppose I should learn how to use my vag-com enough to be able to do that... so at least I know which effing sensor I need to be playing with. I've already replaced one rear relucter ring (because I knew it was rusted/cracked) but it didn't fix the problem.
Disconnecting the ABS under the hood fixes it, though! haha ...

Seriously though... that vag thing is awesome. Do you know how to do it?
