Tire diameter is the ONLY concern for quattro. That's it! Not weight, not colour, not ANYTHING.
He's right you know. There's a good technical reason, too, but I'm too lazy to look it up and too stupid to remember it.
It's simple

Quattro is all mechanical... and its job is to keep all 4 wheels spinning at the same speed. If you put on rear tires that have a larger overall diameter than the fronts, then the fronts will ALWAYS be spinning faster... and it'll ALWAYS be trying to send torque to the rear to compensate. Your diff would overheat, and explode, killing dozens!

I might have used a little imagination at the end there...

Now that the diameter question has been cleared up, I was wondering if running 19x8.5 all the way around will be alright as far as rubbing is concerned. I have a 2002 A4. Another question I have that is related to that is, I want to lower the car. What springs will get me the lowest drop? I want to be sitting right at the tire with 19s.

There are some people on here with 19's... somebody should chime in. PM Pops, he should know. I think he's even staggered... haha!

But yeah, just get coilovers, that'll allow you to fine tune the height adjustment.

Just so this doesn't keep coming up, tire diameter is calculated like this:
225/40R18
225=tire width in milimeters
40=aspect ratio; each sidewall measures 40% of the tire width (225mm) don't forget there are two sidewalls
18=wheel diameter in inches.

So for the overall diameter:
(225*.40*2)/25.4+18=25.09in
Height of both sidewalls divided by 25.4 (number of milimeters in one inch) plus the wheel diameter equals total tire diameter in inches
