Default RUST-PROOFING!?

Ugh, I hate this ****... it makes such a mess of your car! My mechanic told me I should definately get it done, since I plan on holding on to the a4.

I dunno what to do... I've never felt the need to do it before.

I'm in Canada... so obviously the salt and snow gets at it... but still... audi's dont succumb to rust very easily... argh. 'tis the season to do it, though... if I choose to.

undercoating it good If you dont do much work on your car yourself
its a real B*&XCH if you have to work on it as you said its messy
I Did mine during the summer whn it was really Dry out
as now its too humind
I used the drip less stuff and sprayed it on body parts that are exposed and not
rust proofed from the factorie which isnt much
On the undercarrage I use the rubber undercoating the help deading
road noise which helps with rust as well

Well I definately won't do it myself... I know the spots I'd miss would be the ones proned to rust.

But yeah... would likely get KROWN to do it (are they a Canadian-only franchise?)

Depending on how long you plan to keep your car, if you are in an area where they salt the roads or there is salt water from the ocean - definitely do it.

Apparantly it's fairly common to ship used cars from the mid-west and east coast areas over to my area (the Seattle area) because we don't have rust problems and aren't familiar with the problem (it's wet over here, just not salty). They can be purchased really cheap at auction, and sold to a non-savvy consumer for standard blue book values.

I almost bought a 2001 A4 that was absolutely beautiful and drove great.... until my mechanic told me it was COVERED in rust and he wouldn't buy it. The place selling it had another five Audi's, all 2001, which were all covered in rust.

Jeebus, 01's with rust?

That is effin crazy. They salt the hell out of our roads up here... and I've never seen ANY a4 'covered' in rust... I've never seen a hole in an a4, from rust... maybe LIGHT surface rust on either the fender, or the A pillar... can't think of a time I've seen rust anywhere else.

Who knows though... my experience with never seeing rusted ones is what makes me NOT want to rust-proof... but in 5 years, I'll likely still have the car... and who knows what'll be up.

Argh. It's so dirty.

But that was the thing about these cars.... I couldn't tell they were rusted.

From the outside they looked perfect. From the top of the engine they looked clean. The body was in great shape. Absolutely no rust holes or anything that might have tipped me off. The fender looked perfectly painted and in great shape, there was no exterior rust at all.

It was only my mechanic who caught it (bless his heart) - he put it up on the rack, glanced at certain bolts, and brought it right back down. He didn't even bother to do a "real" inspection because the rust was so bad. I guess there were bolts/screws that you couldn't even tell were bolts/screws because they were just so coated in rust.

But from the outside these looked like near perfect 2001's.

So Neil, you're saying I shouldn't bother? I mean, I don't want to do it, obviously... And my car has seen 5 winters now and underneath it is still very clean, no rust anywhere... so audi's are definately good that way. I dunno, might do it as a "better safe than sorry" thing... but really, I'd prefer to hang onto my money, AND keep my car clean. I've worked on cars that have been rust proofed, it's gross.
