I was just so excited to see the A3, i wanted to share it with you guys. 
Haldex transfers power to the wheels only when necessary using a clutch. Torsen distributes the power all the time to the front and back. the torsen is fully mechanical while the Haldex is full of sensors and electronics.

Haldex is not all that bad. The TT has always had Haldex. Torsen is heavier too. Can't stay with the old 1980's AWD forever you know. lol
And contrary to belief, the torsen system is NOT all mechanical. The torsen unit (TORque SENsing unit) itself is a sensor which distributes power between the front and rear driveshafts. Before 1988 there was no Torsen and the quattro system only had all manual locking differentials. Originally the rear still had manual locks after the intro of torsen, but there was some sort of auto disengage feature that unlocked the rear after regular road speed was attained.
Quattro has gone through many different changes over the years. It's evolution.
