I'm pretty sure it was this one, P0501. But for shitsngiggles can you see what the bently manual says for the other code too? Thanks man.

16885 P0501
Vehicle Speed Sensor Range/Performance

16887 P0503
Vehicle Speed Sensor Intermittent/Erratic/High Inp
Hey man.. Sorry I was ****** around with my stereo all last night and completely forgot to check the bently.. Looks like avant was helpful....? But I'll be sure to check when i get home today to see if it says anything that is more informitive or with more detail that avant helped you out with... I guess i could have just pmed you this..

Hahaha.. Have fun making sense of all this.... But this is the trobleshooting steps for speed signal testing:
and no, there arent any pics to go with it...

Your engine code is AWM, but im sure you already knew that...

To test speed signal, vehicle must be driven. Doing this requires a second person.
CAUTION!

Secure Scan Tool (ST) on the rear seat and operate it from there by second technician.
Connect diagnostic tester => page AUDI-B5-FU11-ST-001-03ST-5.
Start engine and let run at idle.
Under address word 33, select "Diagnostic mode 1: Checking measuring values."
Select the measuring value "PID 13: Vehicle speed".
Perform a road test, and have the 2nd person observe the indication on the display.
Check specified value of the vehicle speed:
PID
Diagnostic text
Specified value:

13:
Vehicle speed
approx. vehicle speed

End diagnosis and switch ignition off.
If no speed is indicated:
Connect test box to control module wiring harness => page AUDI-B5-FU11-ST-001-04ST-7
Vehicles with engine code AEB
Connect multimeter between sockets 2 & 20 (speed signal) of test box for voltage measurement.
Vehicles with engine code ATW, AWM
To measure voltage, connect multimeter between sockets 3 (terminal 15) & 54 (speed signal) of test box.
Continue for all vehicles
Jack up front left wheel.
Switch ignition on.
Rotate front wheel, and observe voltage indicated while doing so. Specified value: 0.0 to at least 4.0 V, fluctuating
Note:
The right front wheel must not turn during this, hold it steady if necessary.
If indicated voltage does not oscillate:
Remove instrument cluster:
=> Repair Manual, Electrical Equipment, Repair Group 90; Instrument cluster, removing and installing
Check wire connection from Engine Control Module (ECM) to Speedometer -G21- according to wiring diagram.
=> Electrical Wiring Diagrams, Troubleshooting & Component Locations
Erase DTC memory of Engine Control Module (ECM) => page AUDI-B5-FU11-ST-002-06ST-27.
Generate readiness code => page AUDI-B5-FU11-ST-003-03ST-54.

I'm going to have a guage cluster for sale soon. I'll get the part # and all that stuff when I get a chance, get some pics, and throw it in the classifieds.

the part I would be concerned with is intermittent signal this points to an insecure connection because the VSS is working (sometimes)

headshok - will a 2000 cluster work with a 2001? And how much are you asking for it?
avant - how do i go about checking the intermittentness of the signal?

So, I take it you couldnt make sense of my last post? First find out from whoever replaced your VSS if the harness or wires for it were replaced with it.. I dont know if its all one thing, or if there is a harness that connects to the sensor. If no harness/wires were replaced with it, then check them for conitnuity and follow them to wherever they go and make sure the connection is secure, and not UNsecure. If there was an INsecure conncection, I would think that your VSS would ba having emotional probems and not connectivity issues as with an UNsecure connection.

The cluster I have is actually from a 1998 V6, I'll have to get the part #... but I am pretty sure it'll work with your car. The 98+ V6's got the driver info display thing, while the 1.8T's didn't... but yes, I'll get the part # for a 2001's cluster and compare it to the cluster I've got. I'll post it in the classifieds sooooon.
