Default Shopping for a B6

Hi,

I'm new here and shopping A4's.
A good B6 can be had for relatively cheap it seems. I want a 1.8T with the Sports and Premium package.
I've found a lot of '04's for $25-$27k it seems.

I have several questions after using the search capabilities of this forum.

1) How do I detect the oil sludge problem?
I already plan on asking for all oil change records, etc. but how do I know if it has the problem or not

2) The timing belt is another issue?

3) Are the control arm (suspension) issues on B5's only?

What other things should I look for?

Is getting a decent '04 with <$15k miles realistic for $23-24k?

TIA

PS. Im a real car nut and have owned many german cars, but never an Audi.
I currently have an '02 996 Twin Turbo and am replacing a '01 330i with this car.
Loved the BMW, but want something different now, and used Audis are a bargain (as you all know).

1. Excessive engine noise can be an indicator.

2. Timing belt/waterpump must be changed around 60-70k miles.

3. Correct

Good luck on your find, hope you turn up something nice.

you can also open the the oil cap. sometimes you can see the sludge just by opening that up, sometimes you can't.
