Default SMOKE

I just realised today that first thing in the morning when I start my car, if I leave it idling on the spot for about 5 mins, a decent amount of bluey coloured smoke comes out the exhaust and then after a minute it goes away all together. Then the same thing the next morning? Any ideas what may be causing this?

could be burning oil but i doubt that
but it might be becasue too much fuel on a cold engine

Blue smoke, blue smoke, I am pretty sure blue smoke is oil burning.
Are you sure it is smoke, stick your hand in the path of the exhaust and find out if it gets your hand wet. Your could be burning through antifreeze.
Either way it is a seal problem. My guess would be your head gasket or valve seals. Odd that it goes away, like the seal comes back when the car heats up. I had an old Montero that used to produce a bluish exhaust. Wet. It was going through antifreeze like crazy. I think it was the seal on my radiator cap that was bad. You could have that tested, but probably you are looking at seals on the block or head. Have you changed your oil lately? Any water in it (lt. brown or gray not mixed)? Check your antifreeze to see if there is oil in the storage tank (rainbow coloring on top of the water) that will tell you if the seals are out and what is going where.

Smog decreasors, you mean the catalytic converter? If it is truely blue smoke or steam it is some form of oil. Yeah if it is excess fuel (which isn't blue) hitting a cold catalytic converter, it can't handle it and yeah it will put out a kind of black or dark fuel scented smoke. I don't really think you can fix that unless you are purposely running too much fuel to your engine and then decrease the fuel in.
He said it was "bluey".
Anyway a better test is to get down near the exhaust and feel if it is wet and smell if it smells like fuel. And then tell us if it is really steam, fuel, or actual blue smoke (oil burning). And if you want a better diagnosis, tell us which kind of car you have too because turbo or no turbo would make a world of difference on tracking it down.

Just to check my facts I bummed around a little. Sorry, water is "white" steam. And actually I think with the antifreeze our cars use it could come out blue. "Oil in the combustion chamber is blue smoke."

Now be a good kid and site your sources:
http://www.acbs-bslol.com/Gadgets/Smoke.htm

Check your PCV valve and line too, a few of the sites said that is an easy fix before going for seals and gaskets. (Do AUDIs have PCV's?) Come to think of it, I changed my PCV valve at the same time I replaced my radiator cap on my montero so maybe it was the pcv valve.

Sorry your mechanic lied to you APG

ha ha this one is fun too

No oil around the head at all. I have changed my oil heaps of late because I flushed my engine to see if any grimey **** was coming out. You cant see it if your driving, it's only at idle and only for about 1 min maybe 1.30 min. It is really bizzarre. I wouldn't totally discredit apg's mechanic just yet. As when the car just starts to warm up (not by any means hot) it goes away& there is nothing coming out of the exhaust (except for the clear deadly gases that we all love). It has been like that since I bought it & hasn't got any worse or better. Any other ideas?

All I am saying, and any mechanic would back me on this, if you see blue smoke, it is oil burning where it shouldn't be burning. If you don't have other fluids where they should not be, check the simple seals, things like your pcv valve. If I thought that when it is "cold its b/c that the smog decreasors of whatever havent warmed up yet" I would be like oh good point. But we really don't know what the mechanic said here because a mechanic is not going to call anything smog decreasors. And in the end any mechanic that tells you that your car burning oil is normal is a little weird. PCV valves, Turbos (if you have them)(and turbos get hot very fast), maybe some other piece of smog equipment that deals with the oil.
And I meant to check the exhaust when it was smoking not when it was clear noxious fumes. Sorry for that misunderstanding.

I think you may be on the money with the Turbo seals. I think that a little pool may be forming there and when it heats up, it burns off & then I dont have any more until it all settles again.. sound logical? Now, this may coincide with my turbo making a siren (not very loud but getting worse I think) type noise. It could be the bearings aren't getting enough oil. I might take turbo off this weekend and check. Shouldn't be too hard I suppose??

Blue smoke can mean blown turbo, alot of times its mean the turbos on its way out.
