Hey_You, this is what I meant by extending the light source to the end of the footwell.

This is actually my car, and I just got it done. Took a little bit over 5 hours, but there are no wires visible and is running off a lighted switch located in the back of the center coin holder.
Nowhere near Texas.[:@] Socal, to be more specific.
I will however be doing a writeup on how to achieve this setup without any visible wires AND be able to either have them at a constant on/ pulsating with music choice with *gasp* dare I say the word? Neon. [:'(][&:]
Of course, using LED's will also be feasible, but mounting them would be a bit more substantial work because of having to diffuse them along with a general aiming procedure. Both ways use mostly the same steps, just different in the grounding and connection aspects. I'll get right on the DIY tomorrow evening.

Also, here's a job I did today.

Customer was happy with how it turned out. I also mounted some under his seats so that his back footwells also pulse to music. The switches to turn them on and off are located right next to his e-brake in the center console. They are lighted but alas, this cannot be on Audis with the switches I buy. The LED inside is rated only to 12V, and unfortunately (at least my car does, 98.5 1.8T) runs at 14V, effectively frying the LED when you turn the car on.
(The cigarette radar detector and air freshener were not my idea [:@])

To get them to switch on by themselves when you turn on your headlights (if you have that dumb stupid little stubby lever like I do, which you probably do) wire the power to the only thick grey wire in your steering column. Take the 2 screws from under the column off, pull your steering wheel down and out, and pop the upper half up a little, then slide it towards yourself. Then you will see the wire I'm talking abouton the left side. I ran my ground to the main ground hub by the dead pedal. I'll take some pictures here in a sec. THen you can see what I'm talking about. Onlything that is pretty ghetto, is that I didn't have any black wire for the ground, and either did the audio shop that I have connections with. Off to take pictures.
Here ya go. Hope this might answer a question...maybe 2 if I'm lucky
