Default speedometer broken

today i was driving my car and i accelerated a little fast, and then i looked down at the speedometer and it was at zero. Then I kind of stopped fast and it would bounce a little. So I'm thinking its just a jiggly wire. What do you guys think? Is this a quick fix, maybe something I could do or do I need to take it to the shop?

thanks

I wouldn't bet on it being a jiggly wire, but you never know.

I have never replaced one, but my guess is that its a possible DIY but probably a rather large PITA. On my dad's old car (not an Audi), it required removing the whole guage cluster and I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same on our cars.

Audi is a little different its electronic so not so easy to fix, get it scanned for fault codes it could be something else like the VSS

Could just be a broken or loose speed sensor. Where are the speed sensors on the audi? Trans, Wheels?

yea the speedometer still works, and its not a fuse, because it has been working on and off. if it was the fuse then it wouldnt work at all I believe. So ifs its just a loose sensor anyone know where I could find it?

also if this matters, the odometer does not work when the speedometer doesnt work. Or at least I think it doesn't, I know the trip odometer doesn't work so i assume the regular odometer.

thanks

my speedo starting cutting on and off also...the tach still works but i am throwing code number 16885. I recently had my tranny out maybe 2 weeks ago and wodering if it could be something as simple as the vss not being bolted down tight enough. Does anyone know if a loose vss would throw a code or if the code means that the sensor is about to go? Also is there a bolt torque spec on the sensor? thanks guys you always are lifesavers
