It could be as simple as a loose or dirty sensor. Also check to make sure the wire isnt pinched anywhere. There probably is a torque but i dont think itd be to much of an issue. It just needs to be tight so it doesnt fall out. The depth is set by the sensor base and the housing. also be sure the toner ring on the trans isnt damaged or dirty.

it really depends. but you can use diagnostic codes to get KMH on your air conditioning screen if you're **** out of luck.. that is if it's a 99.5+ i'm pretty sure..

I have a '97 1.8t manual, my speedo isn't working either. I've never notice it jump around, though. I have replaced the VSS, still no luck. If you want to replace it, its a relatively cheap part (~$50 I believe) and its an easy easy DIY. That is, assuming I did it properly :P

VSS is located on the side/top of the transmission, easily reachable by hand if you're under the car. Mine wasn't bolted on, it had a plastic arm that snapped/clipped into place on the transmission.

If anyone figures this out please help us all out. My problem might be the transmission itself, since that's been grinding and doing evil things for a while.
