Default Sport Package Question...

Question for all you Audi experts. I just had a new engine put in my 01' Avant (sport package) Dealer paid for because of oil sludge at 45k miles or so. Car feels a bit down on HP. I'm worried that the Sport Package in 01 came with a bigger turbo or something. Basically I want to make sure I got the same package I did when I brought it to them. Should be 170 HP right? Was that standard on all 01's? Thanks for the help. Dan Altvater

I believe sport package for B5 is suspension, wheels, and steering wheel. No engine mods.
You should be at 170 hp. I wonder if you feel a small difference due to something with reflashing the ECU etc. A new engine should open up a little bit after you break it in for awhile so if the power difference is small, maybe it will come into its own after you break the engine in.

It does have a T with a little red flag next to. Does that mean it has 170HP or should have 170HP.

01s have 170hp. All B5s before 01 (aka 96 - 00) had 150hp.

I am at work and can't look through my trusty Bentley manual. I am not sure the differences between 00 to 01 and whether there was a different engine code. For the most part I believe they are the same engine but the PSI for the turbo was turned up just a bit to get the extra hp. Not sure if there were other differences (the valve sizing change occured 99-00 I think). Someone will probably correct me on that.

Anywho, if there were other small changes, perhaps they gave you a 00 engine instead of an 01. Or if they are the same engine, maybe they didn't turn the turbo up (ECU controller again). IDK, just chip that b*tch and run with it.

the 01's got variable valve timing and a K03 sport turbo, which accounts for the extra 20 ponies.

Awesome, thanks guys. That makes sense. If it went in with 170HP it had to have come out with 170HP. Unless they bumped the ECU back for no reason. I think I'm going to drop the $650 on the APR chip. My other car is a 87' 911. When I drive the Porsche one day and get in the Audi the next I feel like I'm driving a big rig with no brakes. Amazing how under powered these things are from the factory. Looking forward to getting some brakes and a chip. Thanks everyone!

I was going to pay $150 extra so I can switch it back and forth.

I just re-read this and noticed Belligerenceā„¢ cleared everything up by saying that it's not an ECU thing and indeed it an entirely different turbo. Funny because I just called the dealership and they said it was an Audi ECU upgrade. So the Sport does have an engine mod and it's not a remapping. It's a physically bigger Turbo.

I thought it was all ECU too. So the K03 in an 01 is different than the K03 in all previous year A4s???

Also, is it true what he is saying: All pre 01 A4s have no VVT???

I am not saying he is wrong, just that I was unaware and learned something new today if he is right. I would like to see a supporting post or two.
