Default Starting DIY stuff .. need some help

Hello eveyone,

I bought my Audi a couple months ago and I'm about to start my first DIY: change the oil and oil filter. I know this sounds lame for people used to tackle timing belts, but I gotta start somewhere :P

Anyway, I needed some sugestions about what kind of oil should I use and also which filter is recommended. I plan on giving this baby the best there is, so I would like to know if there's any particular brands that are recommended for Audi's.

I've looked for some tutorial on the web and so forth and actualy got a few quite useful, but there seems to be no agreement about filter and oil brands; so what better place to get informed than audiforums ?

Also FYI,

2.8L 2000
90000 miles

Thanks in advance for reading this and any suggestions are more than apreciated

Engine oil = Castrol or Mobil 1 synthetic
Oil filter = Mann or if on a budget use Fram

You're going to have to get under the car. Some advice - make sure the vehicle is SECURED. Use a floor jack to raise it and jackstands to secure it. NEVER get under a car with the spare tire jack holding it up or just a floor jack holding it up.

Mobil 1 0W-40. DO NOT use a FRAM oil filter. Only use bosch, or Mann.

K&N, Bosch, or Mann filters are all I will use. Mobil 1 Synth oil (grade will depend on your climate).
If you are in a pinch you can use any brand, just don't run on it long (seriously).

I use maintenance as an excuse to have mods done. Next oil change I'll have the shop (audi certified mechanic) install my Stratmosphere Hypershift. Maybe next oil change a rear sway bar. And so on... ;-) I'm really too busy to deal with it and the mess. Don't forget you'll need to take your oil to be recycled. Oh, also make sure its the larger oil filter and not the original size (see service bulletin for oil sludge problem) which will also require a little more oil, not whats mentioned in the manul.

What's the big deal with FRAM oil filters? And where can you get K&N without ordering?

I have gotten K&N at Autozone several times, though not all Autozones carry them
