Default starting problems

Hi
I am having trouble starting the car lately (2001 A4),whenI turn the key the whole way nothing happens.all the lights light up but the engine will not fire, the starter will not turn. it onlyhappens sometimes, maybe once a day, and then the car starts fine after that. It doesn't matter if the car is hot or cold. Doyou think it could be something to do with theimmobilizer? I don't thinkmyslef it is the battery as alarm and everything else still works fine.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

also you dont say if its auto or manual? if auto it could be the inhibitor which wont let you start it in gear for safety reasons
