Default stock exhaust question

k when i was under my car i obviously noticed where the big cat was, but i was just wondering i saw the two pipes coming from the headers (2.8 30V) and there looked to be two little cats on each pipe with skid plates on them...are those cats or not?

the small ones right befor and after the O2 sencer on top of the pipe are the cats, they are coverd with heat sheilds to keep you from lighting grass on fire if you ever decided to actualy park on the grass. The big cat your refering to ( unless you hit a poor helpless creature ) is actuyaly your muffler, and the one in the very back is you resonater.

ok, so on my B5 2.8, there are two cats on each pipe coming from the headers (the ones with the heat shield things) and then the big one in the middle is actually a muffler and near the tips is the resonator. I guess the resonator is just generally known as the muffler?

It will muffel alittle bit but not really, the majority of the noise is absorbed in the middle one.
