Default Stupid Mistake, Need Help.

I have an Automatic 97 A4. This morning I drove into the parking lot and put on my parking hand brake on and turned the key and shut off the ignition. It was stupid of me to forget to put the automatic transmission in park, so the auto transmission shifter was in the Drive position when I shut the car off. I noticed it and put the shifter into Park while the ignition was off and restarted the car. I want to know if this did any damage to my transmission.

Now I notice that when I press down on the brake to shift from park to drive, I hear a little click from the auto shifter area. Is this normal? Someone tell me what they know about this, and if they hear the same click in their automatic when they press on the brakes before they shift from park.

The click sound only happens when i press the brake while the shifter is in the park position.

Nah you didn't do any damage to it. On my B5 it would click in the shifter assembly all the time when shifting into gear. When you hit the brake you are releasing the little gear to allow the shifter to be moved. All normal. You probably just didn't notice it before now.

i hear the same click when i'm in park and press on the brake with my foot...

but here's my question...i hear the same click when i stop while driving (e.g., stopping for a red light or stop sign)...but when i come to a very gradual and soft stop, i don't hear it...

There is a realle in the shifting asembly so when you prees the brake pedal you could move from P>R N>R N>D. it makes a click nose when you prees the brake pedal whenever you move below like 3MPH or standing.
the click might be also from the brake pedal sensor. which does similar or a bit lower click.

and its fine.
