Default Suspension questions

I have a 96 2.8QM, did a bunch of searching on the forums and came to the conclusion the best liked setup by most people was the H&R with bilstein shocks. Found the springs, no problem. Having a little trouble figuring out which shocks I need. One of the shocks looks completely diff from the other. The first one looking like this :

and the second one looking like this:

The difference isn't front and rear shocks as far as I know.

so what is the difference?
Should I be looking at the heavy duty ones, or the touring class, or the sport ones?
Im thinking about going with the race springs, anyone else running the race springs? How stiff is the ride? I used to drive a toyota 4runner and enjoyed the ride in that. Any opinion is welcome. Im going to be doing the upgrade myself, and am going to be renting a spring compressor. Will that be all I need to do the swap?

Thanks in advance!!
