You can get a A6 w/ a 2.7t. That would be far better performance and gas milage with just a chip. OP, find one of those.

id have to agree with the direction cincy's heading toward. you could probably find a 2.7 a little cheaper? and the mpg would be outstanding in comparison.
As far as the line being drawn at those three cars my vouch would be toward the 2000 a6. yet still not a fan of dropin so much on gas.

First of all, i am a noob to the forum and even newer to the audi world.
So which of these 3 would you buy and why?
2000 A6 4.2 pearl white 82k miles for 12,999 already got the dealer to drop from 14k, could prob get him to drop another 500
or from same dealer
2001 lexus is300 green for 14500, didnt begin really talk price, but he'll "get me a good deal"
or from diff dealer
A6 2003 for 16999 black. Didnt really get the any talks going the salesman didnt seem interested.

I sold an Infiniti (too much like driving a sofa - though a sporty one) to buy an A4 1.8 quattro with manual. Really prefer the better mileage and the driving experience. Long trips, the car sips (even me being a leadfoot).

In my opinion if you want a fun car that has potential to make a lot of power then I would go with the IS300! We did a 2JZ GTE swap in ours and after installing our turbo kit and Motec we were making about 680RWHP. Not bad for a family car 
But keep that in mind that the IS300 comes with a 2JZ GE, so you would have to spend some cash to get there!
