Thinking about getting a B5...but...
Well, there are a couple B5's that I'm looking at. They're both around 5k-6k and was wanting one for my first car. I'm a junior right now in high school, 16 almost 17 years old, just got my license today (yay!), and we're (family) moving down to Phoenix, AZ this summer. I plan on getting a job at a Circuit City (or just getting a job period) as soon as possible, and was wanting to know if it would be possible to get a B5. I know Audi's are great cars. AWD, built real good, safe, yada yada yada. I would take out a car loan for 3500 (or so) and probably pay it off in 3 years. I'm planning on saving for a couple of months and putting around $2000 for a down payment. My monthly payments should be low. How would insurance be for me. I really want to get the 1.8L turbo, but how much more money would I pay the insurance company versus having the 2.8L. Oh, and how good are audi's with gas?
Thought I would ask you guys first.
Thanks

Definately get a B5! I've owned a 2.8 and 1.8T and I like the 1.8T MUCH better. The insurance is a little cheaper (I pay ~$1400/yr with two GIANT speeding tickets, i'm 19, and live in MA [:@]), it gets better gas mileage, and its also faster (with a chip and the other mods you see below). I know its hard for a student, but you would be much better off paying cash rather than taking out a loan. Even if you have to save up a little bit longer or take an extra job. Loans are just not a good idea on a car thats ~10 years old. Not to mention, when you don't have to make loan payments, you'll need all that extra money when you get mod fever
before buying the car make sure you come on here and post a lil about it. you will get a thorough review of the car and the condition it should be expected to be in. you want to make sure the timing belt has been done, and just a general over view of the car, how the brakes are, the tires, check under the vehicle (physically get under and remove the under shield thing) and look for any leaks or pools of fluids, drive the car around and listen for odd sounds (if found check if they increase with speed and stuff like that), if you decide on a 1.8t make sure you have srvice records especially for oil changes since the 1.8t engines are prone to sludge build up if using dino oil, and also any other major services that might have been performed on the vehicle, also don't take the sellers word for things such as timing belt changes make sure you get the actual work order receipt. good luck and welcome to the forums!!
Talk to your folks about the option of having them co-sign for your car loan, and having the car placed on their insurance policy. You're still young, so this might be of a benefit to you, and could save you some money down the road opposed to going out on your own. If you're on your parents insurance policy, the montly insurance payments would probably be much cheaper.
The downside is, is if you get into an accident or receive any speeding tickets (you're young, and you will), it will affect their policy. Talk it out with your parents and their insurance agent.....see what they recommend.

I'm not sure why no one has mentioned this, but keep in mind these cars are expensive to maintain- even if real well taken care of over the past ten years. If you are not mechanically inclined enough to do most of the work yourself then plan to stash away an extra $100 a month for normal repairs and wear items (i.e. tie rods, brakes, tires, control arms, driveshafts, clutch, timing belt, cruise control, timing belt, O2 sensors, oh- and did I mention the timing belt??). Parts for the Audi are extremly more expensive than they are for a normal car and service isn't cheap either.
Whis I could have afforded a $5000 car when I was in high school... minimum wage in those days was about $3.00/hr!

i also bought an audi my junior year of highschool..(i am now a senior)..i got a 96 2.8 quattro 5speed(wish i couldhave woundup with a 1.8T)for $3000...it had 101xxx miles all it needed was a timing belt which i got done for 120 at the VW/Audi dealer and a new breaklight bulb...like everyone else said get service records...i got lucky with my car it was owned by an older couple(70 years +) and they were the only owners and had stacks of service records...and i pay around 120 a month for insurance on my own policy........dont get a loan you are going to get the car be fine with it for a few weeks (if that long) and then your going to get mod fever and plus your going to windup paying out much more for the loan .....and again parts are so expensive for the audi...just save up money buy the car...then start puting money away like mentioned above
