Some may not agree with me on this but here is my .02.

Get a cheap beater since you just got your license and WILL do dumb things in the car. Drive this beater around for a year while saving every penny you have and get an B5 Audi. This will give you some driving experience, show your parents responsibility & establish a (hopefully good) record with the insurance co., while allowingyou to save for a better car with no loan.

Thanks guys for the advice...
Right after I get out of high school, I'm going straight to UTI and going to try and get into the Audi program. Yeah, what a coincidence.

Our family has 3 cars, '93 Ranger, '01 Focus, and an '05 Liberty. I can drive the truck around to work and back to save up money for the B5. My dad called farmers last night and insurance would only be $100 a month for me with the truck. It was on their policy, I think.

So the 1.8T would have cheaper insurance?? How is that. When the insurance company sees the word TURBO, they think I'm going to go fast and show off and get into wrecks and what not, lol. I thought the 2.8 would be cheaper.

Again, Thanks

EDIT: Here's the link to the B5's I was looking at.

Um, somehow I don't believe that. Parts alone for my 1.8T cost twice that. It might be possible if you also arranged to give ****-jobs on a weekly basis for the next couple years or you were trading them a load of stolen stereo equipment.

Agreed. I know this kid isn't going to listen, but he will make out SO much better. Buy a beater for $2k - $3k and save up your money. Wait until after you get into your first accident and trash the car. Then go buy a B5 if you have enough saved up and a steady income. You are going to hate it if you get a loan for the Audi and then crash that beauty. Also keep in mind that if you take out a loan for the car, you need to run full coverage until you pay off the loan vs just getting liability coverage if you own the car out right. It depends where you live, but if you get your own insurance plan and pay $1k a year for liability (reasonable in most areas), you will pay almost $2k a year for full coverage.

Trust me. You sacrifice now and get a cheap beater Honda than runs on 87 and gets 35 mpg nstead of the pricey to fix Audi that needs at least 91octane to get 25 mpg, you are gonna save hella cash. Gas, insurance, maintenance, loan interest. In 5 years you will spend triple the amount on the Audi and if you had gone with the cheaper car now, you will be able to afford a much nicer car later.

I am a car guy and I know what it is like to want to get a nice car early. I drove beaters till I was 26 and have so much more money now than if I had blown all my cash on a car when I was 16. I def know the feeling, but I hate to see young guys make such poor financial decisions.

I wasn't really positive about the loan. I can drive the focus to work and back, save up some money, and TADA!

My dad doesn't want me to get a loan anyways. And, I wouldn't have to worry about getting a beater car that isn't reliable, and probably won't have A/C.

If I remember correctly, my insurance went down ~$100/yr when I went from a 2.8 to a 1.8T.

Wow...that's pretty bad gas mileage and you HAVE TO use 91 octane to get that mpg?

I don't know about this. Is it really worth it?? lol
