ticking sound in the engine bay- please tell me this isn't necessarily horrible
I have a ticking sound near the engine block on my 99 1.8TQM. I have also noticed a loss of power recently. Is there any way this might not be horrible news (could this be anything but a valve issue)? Please, any info helps.
Thanks.
Thanks.

is the ticking variable on engine speed? Sounds like lifters ticking, which isn't abnormal. How many miles do you have? As for the loss of power I would check your vacuum lines, and maybe think about replacing your diverter valve.

The ticking speeds up and gets louder as the rpm's rise. I have 60,350 miles on it. There is no check engine light. Also, when i turn the car off the engine ticks really fast for about a second after the engine is off.

Sorry Jestnomen, I'm trying to figure out how to do this. When I look at the engine, its on the right side of the block, I guess somewhere in the middle, maybe closer to the back

Here are two sound clips of my engine. They are posted in the sights and sounds forum.
Thanks.
